Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is a condition that causes pain in the heel and bottom of the foot. It occurs when the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue that connects your heel bone to your toes, becomes inflamed or irritated. Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of heel pain, affecting over 3 million people each year in the U.S. alone.

What causes plantar fasciitis?

Inflammation and irritation of the plantar fascia is usually the result of excessive or consistent strain. Common causes include:

  • Overuse: Repetitive activities such as running, jumping, playing sports, or standing for long periods
  • Footwear: Wearing ill-fitting shoes, especially those with poor arch support
  • Lack of footwear: Walking or standing on hard surfaces while barefoot or in socks
  • Foot mechanics: Natural attributes like flat feet or high arches
  • Obesity: Excess weight puts added strain on the plantar fascia.
  • Age: The risk of developing plantar fasciitis increases with age as tissues in the foot suffer wear and tear.

What are symptoms of plantar fasciitis?

  • Heel pain: Sharp, stabbing pain in the heel, especially in the morning when stepping out of bed
  • Stiffness: Difficulty flexing the foot after periods of inactivity
  • Pain with activity: Pain that gets worse during or after walking, running, or standing for a long time

Though painful and irritating, plantar fasciitis is usually not serious. However, if left untreated, it can result in chronic heel pain which could cause a change in walking patterns and posture. Over time, this can lead to complications with other parts of the body, like the knees, hips, or back.

How is plantar fasciitis treated?

Most cases of plantar fasciitis pain can be managed with basic at-home or non-invasive clinical care. Common treatments include:

  • Rest
  • Taking over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication like ibuprofen or acetaminophen
  • Using orthotics like cushioned shoe inserts
  • Wearing more supportive shoes
  • Having a pair of comfortable, supportive shoes to wear while at home
  • A prescribed physical therapy or stretching routine

If these conservative treatments fail to provide adequate results, interventional pain management options can be an effective alternative. Twin Cities Pain Clinic offers minimally invasive therapies that can relieve plantar fasciitis pain:

  • Corticosteroid Injections
