Though most well-known for its cosmetic applications, Botox is also an effective treatment for chronic pain, particularly migraine headaches. Botox injections are minimally invasive, can be completed during a short clinic visit, and may provide several months of migraine relief.
What is Botox?
Short for OnabotulinumtoxinA, Botox is a neurotoxin that can relax muscle contractions and block pain signals.
To treat migraines, small amounts of Botox solution are injected near the head and neck area. The toxin prevents neurotransmitter chemicals released by the brain from reaching nerve endings.
The pain signals are still there, but because they are blocked from reaching the nerves, little to no pain is actually felt.
What Can I Expect During the Procedure?
You will be brought into an exam room and lain on your back on a sanitized exam table. A series of Botox injections will gently be made around your forehead and temples. You will then turn over and lay on your stomach. One more series of injections will then be made around your neck area.
What Can I Expect After the Procedure?
Botox requires no sedation and does not otherwise result in any impairment. At the conclusion of your appointment, you can immediately resume normal activities.
Botox injections are generally very effective, but the relief is temporary. To ensure best results, it is recommended that the procedure be repeated every three months.
Schedule an appointment with a Twin Cities Pain Clinic provider to discuss if Botox can help with your pain.
