Genicular Nerve Block

The word genicular means “relating to the knee.” Genicular nerves are a network of nerves situated in and around the knee that allow the knee to function and feel different sensations, including pain.

Due to injuries or medical conditions, if any of these nerves become damaged or irritated, the pain signals sent from the genicular nerves can grow severe, even debilitating. A genicular nerve block helps to relieve pain by blocking these pain signals coming from the knee.

What is a genicular nerve block?

A genicular nerve block is an outpatient procedure in which an anesthetic medication is injected near the genicular nerves. The medication creates a numbing effect that temporarily “switches off” pain signals being sent from the knee. Steroids may also be used to help reduce inflammation.

Our team also administers genicular nerve blocks to diagnose whether another procedure, called a genicular nerve ablation, would be effective. If the genicular nerve block provides adequate pain relief, it is generally determined that the ablation procedure will also be effective.

What happens during a genicular nerve block procedure?

You will be brought into the procedure room and laid on a special table. The skin of your knee will be cleaned at the injection site and a local anesthetic will be applied. Your physician will use a fluoroscope (a special kind of x-ray called) to guide the needle to the appropriate site.

The medication is injected at the site of the appropriate genicular nerves. The medication bathes the nerves, relieving pain.
