Trigger Point Injections

Trigger points are painful “knots” of muscle that form when said muscles remain tense and stressed for an extended period. These knots can often be felt under the skin when you touch or rub the affected area. Trigger points may irritate the nerves around them and cause pain. Trigger point injections are administered to help relieve that pain.

What is a trigger point injection?

A trigger point injection is a minimally invasive, outpatient procedure for relieving pain caused by flaring trigger points.

Using a needle, an anesthetic, occasionally combined with a steroid medication, is injected directly into the trigger point. The medication helps the muscles at the site of the trigger point relax, reducing inflammation and relieving pain. Along with numbing the pain in the muscle, the medication also improves blood flow to the area, allowing the body to heal itself faster.

What can I expect during a trigger point injection procedure?

Trigger point injections are performed right in our clinic. You will be positioned on a special chair or table to allow for the best access to the trigger point location. Your skin will be cleaned and prepped at the injection site, and a local anesthetic may be used to numb the skin. The provider inserts a needle directly into the trigger point and injects the anesthetic mixture, which relaxes the muscles. The entire procedure only takes about 15 minutes.

What can I expect after the procedure?

When the injection is complete, a bandage is placed over the injection site. You will be encouraged to stretch and relax the affected muscles, but you may otherwise resume normal activities right away.
