What Is ReActiv8?
ReActiv8 is an implantable restorative neurostimulation system that targets the root cause of certain types of chronic low back pain. Unlike spinal cord stimulators that aim to block pain signals, ReActiv8 is designed to restore proper muscle control and spinal stability by reactivating the multifidus muscle.
The system consists of:
- A small implantable pulse generator
- Thin leads placed near the nerves that control the multifidus muscle

The pulse generator emits mild electrical pulses, which are carried by the leads to the specific nerves that control the multifidus muscle. What to expect during the procedure
The ReActiv8 implant procedure is typically performed as an outpatient or same-day surgical procedure.
During the procedure:
- You will receive anesthesia for comfort
- Your physician will place the leads near the appropriate spinal nerves
- The small pulse generator is implanted under the skin, usually in the lower back or buttock area
- The incisions are closed, and you will be brought to a recovery area.
You will be monitored in the recovery area for a short time while your anesthesia wears off. The surgical team will review your postoperative care instructions and then you will be able to go home.
What to expect after the procedure
After implantation, your care team will program the device and teach you how to use the external controller.
Recovery and therapy expectations include:
- Mild soreness at the incision sites for several days
- Gradual return to normal activities as directed by your physician
- Performing two 30-minute therapy sessions per day at home
- No reliance on paresthesia (tingling sensations) during treatment
