Kyphoplasty

Kyphon® Balloon Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that can repair vertebral compression fractures (VCF).

A vertebral compression fracture (VCF) occurs when a vertebra bone in the spine collapses as a result of traumatic injury or certain medical conditions, such as osteoporosis, cancer, or benign lesions. These VCFs often lead to chronic back pain.

In one hour or less, kyphoplasty can drastically reduce pain while improving alignment and mobility. This, along with a reduced dependency on opioid pain medication, can result in significantly improved overall quality of life.

What is kyphoplasty?

During a balloon kyphoplasty procedure, a tiny balloon is inserted into the impacted vertebrae through a small incision in the back. The balloon is inflated to raise the collapsed vertebra and return it to its original position.

The balloon is then removed, leaving behind a cavity of empty space. The cavity is filled with bone cement to support the vertebrae and prevent further collapse.

Kyphoplasty can reduce or eliminate back pain caused by spinal fracture, as well as restore vertebral body height and proper alignment of your spine.

Who is a candidate for kyphoplasty?

Though spinal fractures can occur in many ways, balloon kyphoplasty is primarily used to treat vertebral compression fractures (VCF) caused by osteoporosis, cancer or benign lesions.

The severity of pain caused by a VCF can vary. Many cases go undiagnosed for a long time because patients think they simply have “common” back pain and rely on over-the-counter pain medication instead of seeking treatment.

The following signs may signal a potential VCF:

  • Over age 50 or postmenopausal
  • Diagnosed with osteoporosis or cancer
  • Sudden onset back pain lasting longer than a few days

If you or someone you know fits this description, a VCF may be present. Early detection can prevent more severe complications associated with VCFs, so treatment is recommended as soon as possible.
