MILD Procedure

The MILD procedure is a safe, effective, and minimally invasive treatment to relieve pain caused by lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS). LSS is a condition that occurs when an area of the lower (lumbar) spine narrows and pinches the nerves running through it. This narrowing can be caused by the buildup of excess tissue or bone in the area. MILD treats pain by removing the excess material and relieving compression on the spinal nerves.

What is MILD?

MILD is a quick and safe outpatient procedure that is performed through an incision so tiny, it doesn’t even need stitches.

Special tools are inserted through the small incision and used to remove excess buildup of material in the spinal canal. This reduces compression on the spinal nerves, relieving pain and improving overall mobility.

MILD is a very low-risk, FDA-approved procedure that can reduce LSS pain by more than half.

What can I expect during the procedure?

You will be brought into the procedure room and laid face down on a special table. A small amount of local anesthetic will be applied to numb your skin at the incision site.

Using a fluoroscope (a type of x-ray machine), the surgeon will carefully guide a needle into your spinal canal. Contrast dye is injected to help give a clear image of the area where compression is occurring.

A very small incision is made in your skin. A small tube is inserted through the incision and guided to the spine. Small, specialized instruments are guided through the tube and used to remove the excess material causing the compression on your spinal nerves. The entire procedure takes less than one hour.

What can I expect after the procedure?

The incision will be covered with a small bandage. You will be monitored for a short time in the recovery room and can then go home.

After just a few days of taking it easy, you can resume normal activities and start enjoying life with less pain.
