Bursa Injection

A bursa is a small sac of lubricating fluid that helps muscles and tendons move over bones without friction. Bursae can be found around most major joints in the body, including the shoulders, hips, and knees. At times, a bursa can become inflamed, resulting in a condition called bursitis, which may cause pain during movement. The pain can become more severe over time and may even be present during rest.

What is a bursa injection?

A bursa injection is an outpatient procedure for relieving pain caused by bursitis. Using a needle, a mixture of steroid medication and anesthetic is injected into the affected bursa, reducing inflammation, and providing pain relief.

What can I expect during the procedure?

One of our physicians will perform the bursa injection under ultrasound guidance. First, a local anesthetic will be applied to numb the skin at the injection site. A combination of steroid and anesthetic (numbing) medication will then be injected around the bursa through a needle. The procedure only takes a few minutes and you can go home shortly after.

What can I expect after the procedure?

We recommend that you take it easy for the remainder of the day. You may resume normal activities the next day. You may experience tenderness or aggravated symptoms for several days after the injection as the anesthetic wears off.  Apply ice packs to help with this pain. Patients usually feel relief after a few days, but it may take 10-14 days to take full effect.

You should follow-up with your provider two weeks after the injection to assess its effectiveness and determine the next step in your care.
