Ilioinguinal Nerve Block

The ilioinguinal nerve supplies sensation to the lower abdomen, groin, and inner thigh. When irritated or damaged, it can cause burning, aching, or shooting pain in these areas. Chronic pain in the groin and lower abdomen may be fairly common but can have a significant impact on your quality of life.

If you’re struggling with groin or lower abdomen discomfort, an ilioinguinal nerve block may offer relief.

What is an ilioinguinal nerve block?

An ilioinguinal nerve block is a minimally invasive, non-surgical procedure that involves injecting a local anesthetic and sometimes a steroid medication near the affected ilioinguinal nerve.

The anesthetic numbs the nerve, temporarily blocking pain signals, while the steroid reduces inflammation for longer-lasting relief.

When is an ilioinguinal nerve block used?

This procedure can be beneficial for managing groin and lower body pain caused by various conditions, including:

  • Chronic groin pain: Groin pain can arise from various causes. An ilioinguinal nerve block can help diagnose the specific source of pain and offer temporary relief.
  • Ilioinguinal neuralgia: This condition is the result of damage to the ilioinguinal nerve, causing persistent pain in the groin and inner thigh.
  • Inguinal hernia surgery: Post-surgical pain in the groin is common, and an ilioinguinal nerve block can provide relief.

What happens during a ilioinguinal nerve block?

You will be brought into the procedure room where you will lie comfortably on your back on a special table. Your skin will be cleaned at the injection site and a local anesthetic will be applied to minimize any discomfort.

Your physician will use a special kind of x-ray (called a fluoroscope) to precisely guide the needle to the appropriate site. A special medication is injected around the nerve. The medication bathes the nerves, relieving pain.
