Cervical Epidural Steroid Injection
A cervical epidural steroid injection is a common and effective treatment for relieving neck, shoulder, and arm pain that generally results from a nerve(s) becoming pinched by discs in the cervical spine.
The cervical vertebrae are bones that make up the part of the spine that runs through the neck region. Certain medical conditions like herniated discs, spinal stenosis, or arthritis can cause the cervical nerves to become irritated or inflamed, causing pain.
Using the guidance of a fluoroscope, the provider injects the steroid into the epidural space surrounding the cervical spine, near the nerves causing pain. The medication then spreads out and bathes the affected nerve, reducing inflammation and relieving pain.
The amount and length of relief experienced may differ from patient to patient. The ESI procedure may be repeated up to three times in a 12-month period.
