Lateral Femoral Cutaneous Nerve Injections
The lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN) runs along the front of your hip, branching out to provide sensation to the outer part of your thigh. Due to injury or certain medical conditions, this nerve may become irritated or compressed. This can lead to pain, burning, tingling, or numbness in the outer thigh, often described as a “pins-and-needles” sensation. This condition is known as meralgia paresthetica.
A lateral femoral cutaneous nerve injection is a non-surgical treatment that can help relieve chronic pain of the outer thigh.

What is a lateral femoral cutaneous nerve injection?
A lateral femoral cutaneous nerve injection is a minimally invasive, outpatient procedure that involves injecting a local anesthetic and sometimes a steroid medication near the LFCN.
The anesthetic numbs the nerve, providing temporary pain relief, while the steroid reduces inflammation for longer-lasting relief.
What does a lateral femoral cutaneous nerve injection treat?
Lateral femoral cutaneous nerve injections are effective for managing pain caused by a variety of conditions, including
- Meralgia paresthetica
- Chronic outer thigh pain
- Pain after hip surgery
What happens during a lateral femoral cutaneous nerve injection?
You will be brought into the procedure room where you will lie comfortably on your back on a special table. Your skin will be cleaned at the injection site and a local anesthetic will be applied to minimize any discomfort.
Your physician will use a special kind of x-ray (called a fluoroscope) to precisely guide the needle to the appropriate site. The steroid/anesthetic medication is injected around the nerve. The medication bathes the nerves, reducing inflammation and relieving pain. The entire procedure takes less than 30 minutes.
The pain relief may be immediate or take a few days to reach full effect. The duration of relief varies depending on the individual and the underlying cause of pain.
